Lasalgaon, Nashik
The onion market in Lasalgaon, Asia’s largest wholesale hub, is witnessing a continuous price rise after Diwali due to reduced arrivals and widespread damage to the kharif onion crop in the Nashik region. Experts warn of a possible shortage in the coming weeks, pushing up both wholesale and retail onion prices in Maharashtra.
Before the Diwali holidays, the Lasalgaon APMC onion price averaged around ₹1,100 per quintal. By Monday, it rose to ₹1,325, then ₹1,350 on Tuesday, and reached ₹1,351 per quintal on Wednesday, showing a steady upward trend.
As per APMC Lasalgaon data, around 6,464 quintals of summer onions arrived on Monday, increasing to 7,778 quintals on Tuesday, and dropping again to 5,346 quintals by Wednesday. Prices fluctuated between ₹500 and ₹1,800 per quintal through the week.
Crop Damage and Market Arrivals
Market officials say heavy rainfall in Nashik has affected nearly 80% of the kharif onion area, disrupting harvesting and labour availability. Current arrivals mainly consist of stored summer onions harvested during March – April. Farmers holding stock are now releasing it to benefit from the higher market rates.
The late kharif onion sowing has also been delayed, meaning fresh produce will likely reach the market only by mid-December. Until then, onion supply in India is expected to remain tight.
Government Team Assesses Losses
A central government delegation recently visited Nashik to assess crop damage and monitor the progress of late kharif planting. They also inspected onion storage facilities impacted by moisture and rain seepage.
With limited arrivals, depleting summer stocks, and no immediate supply relief, onion prices in Lasalgaon and across Maharashtra are projected to stay firm, potentially driving onion price inflation in retail markets.
