The Union Cabinet has sanctioned ₹37,952 crore under the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) scheme for the upcoming Rabi 2025-26 season, ensuring uninterrupted supply of phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers at affordable rates. The subsidy will remain valid from October 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026.
The new allocation is about ₹736 crore higher than the subsidy announced for the Kharif 2025 season, reflecting the government’s effort to shield farmers from fluctuating global fertiliser prices.
Under the revised NBS rates, the subsidy will apply to key fertilisers including DAP and NPKS complexes, which play a crucial role in boosting crop yield during the winter sowing period. The move helps maintain price stability even as international costs of raw materials like phosphoric acid, potash and sulphur continue to rise.
The NBS programme, in effect since April 2010, provides per-nutrient subsidy support to manufacturers and importers, allowing fertilisers to be sold to farmers at regulated MRP. A total of 28 P&K fertiliser grades (excluding urea) are covered under the scheme.
According to the Department of Fertilizers, the new subsidy structure has been finalised after reviewing recent global price trends of DAP, MOP, sulphur and other raw materials. The government’s objective is to keep the fertiliser supply chain steady while protecting farmers from market volatility.
