Soil Test Sampling Guide

1. Tools & Equipment

Use clean equipment: soil auger or spade, soil probe, trowel, and a clean bucket to avoid contamination.

2. Sampling Area

If the land is uniform (same crop, same soil type), take one sample for up to 1 hectare (2.5 acres). If there are different soils or crops, collect samples separately.

3. Sampling Pattern

Walk in a zig-zag or grid pattern across the field and select 8–10 random spots.

4. Collecting Soil Samples

At each spot, clear surface debris, dig down about 15–20 cm, take a thin slice of soil, and place it in a clean bucket.

5. Composite Sample

Mix all the collected soil thoroughly in the bucket. Remove stones, roots, or debris. Take about ½ to 1 kg of soil as the representative sample.

6. Pack & Label

Place the soil in a clean, dry bag. Label clearly with:

  • Farmer’s Name
  • Village / Field Number
  • Crop grown or intended crop
  • Date of sampling

7. Submit to Lab

Send the sample to the nearest Soil Testing Lab / Krishi Vigyan Kendra. The report will guide you on fertilizer and soil amendments.

✅ Helpful Tips

  • Wait 7–10 days after fertilization or irrigation before sampling.
  • For orchards, collect samples near the root zone, not at the base of the tree.
  • In saline/alkaline soils, take separate samples from surface and sub-surface layers.
