The Kerala government has launched a major climate-resilient agriculture initiative worth ₹2,365 crore, aimed at transforming the state’s farming sector and strengthening its ability to withstand climate-related challenges.
The project, known as KERA (Kerala Climate Resilient Agri-Ecosystem Project), focuses on modernising agricultural practices, improving irrigation infrastructure, enhancing market access, and promoting sustainable farming systems across the state. The initiative is expected to directly benefit thousands of farmers over the next four years.
A key objective of the project is to promote climate-smart farming techniques, including efficient water management, soil conservation, and the adoption of resilient crop varieties. The programme also emphasizes strengthening post-harvest infrastructure, enabling farmers to reduce losses and secure better prices through improved market linkages.
In addition, the project includes extensive capacity-building and training programmes, with plans to train nearly 32,000 farmers in modern, sustainable agricultural practices. These efforts aim to improve farm productivity while reducing vulnerability to extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, and erratic rainfall.
The KERA project aligns with Kerala’s broader vision of sustainable development and climate adaptation in agriculture, ensuring long-term livelihood security for farmers while protecting natural resources.
Officials stated that the initiative will play a crucial role in building a resilient agricultural ecosystem that balances productivity, environmental sustainability, and farmer income growth.
